Read this guide and get accomplished! Finding porn online is becoming too easy day by day. For parents it can prove to be a big nuisance with readily available content for free. Thankfully the technology provides us with enough tools which allow us to block pornography. As a parent you should know how exactly you can achieve it. There are several ways you can do that. Let’s look at all of them.

How to Block Porn Sites

Using a Hosts File

This method is used when you are looking to block specific sites you know your children are browsing too frequently. This method doesn’t require use of any software as such.

  1. Open Explorer and browse to C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory.
  2. You will see a file named ‘hosts’ in it. Copy it to your desktop and Open it in notepad. Use Right click Open with command since it won’t open with any known software directly.
  3. It usually looks like this. Enter the following values at the end

127.0.0.1    <sitetobeblocked_1>.com

127.0.0.1    <sitetobeblocked_2>.com

  1. Keep entering like that for each site in its own new line.
  2. Now save the file back and copy the file back to the C:/Window/System32/drivers/etc folder. You will be asked if you want to replace the file in destination. Choose Replace option and Windows will ask for your administrator permissions. Click ‘continue’ to finish the job.

Now all those sites point to 127.0.0.1 IP address which is your own computer’s IP address effectively blocking them for good.

Using DNS

Changing your DNS settings is one of the more effective ways to block objectionable content on your PC or any of the connected devices on your home network which includes your kid’s mobiles on Wifi. To do that you need to change DNS settings on your router to use the following DNS server addresses instead of those provided by your ISP:

208.67.222.123

208.67.220.123

These DNS server addresses will switch your home network to use OpenDNS’s Family Shield Network which automatically blocks away most of the porn and objectionable content. You can even buy their premium service to get customized filtering. Instructions to setup DNS settings for your router or any device you are using are mentioned on their page.

Using Safe Web Search

Nowadays Google search has become the default homepage of sorts for everyone. Students use it so often to do their homework and projects.

Now Google Search has a small nifty feature that allows you to block objectionable content from appearing in the search results.

  1. Login using your own account on Google and open google.com.
  2. Visit settings page by using the menu at the bottom.
  3. The first setting you will see is Safesearch Filters. Check the option ‘Filter explicit results’.
  4. Now click on the link adjacent to it which says ‘Lock SafeSearch’. It will ask you to enter your password once more. Do that and sign in.
  5. Click the button ‘Lock SafeSearch’.

Now whenever anyone on that browser will do a google search whether using his/her own account or even anonymously, Google will always filter the search results for objectionable content no matter what. This Lock can be removed only by the account which has set it initially.

Since the setting is browser specific, you should repeat the above steps on all browsers installed on your PCs and if you have multiple profiles setup on your computer, you will need to repeat these steps after logging through those profiles.  Also if your kids use other search engines, you need to set safe search options for those too.

These settings will remain in effect till the browser cookies are intact. Once they are cleared, this preference will be reset.

Using Windows Family Safety

This method is specific to Windows 8/8.1. If you are using Windows 7, you should get Windows Live Essentials instead and use Windows Live Family Safety Feature.

  2. Now select ‘Change PC settings’ option.
